CARING FOR YOUR KO FURNITURE PIECES

Below are three categories of finishes that I use with specific care instructions for each. If you have any question about what product was used to finish your piece, or further questions about care and maintenance, please contact me.

Furniture Pieces, Coaster Sets, Business Card Holders, Bread Saws, Art Pieces, Instruments, Customs Boxes, Games, and more:

Rubio Monocoat

I use Rubio Monocoat for almost all interior applications. This is an eco-friendly product developed for hardwood flooring that is extremely durable, beautiful, and leaves a soft satin finish that is lovely to touch. If this sounds like your piece, it is finished with Rubio.

What to do:

  • Gently dust your piece with a soft dry cloth

  • Wipe with a water moistened (not wet) cloth for cleaning

  • If necessary, wipe with a mild solution of vinegar and water for stubborn areas

  • Keep your piece out of prolonged direct sunlight and indoors in a climate controlled environment.

What NOT to do:

  • Never use anything other than a water dampened cloth or mild water and vinegar solution to clean your piece. Using cleaners, polishes or sprays will very likely ruin or at least dull the finish. The only exception to this are the products linked below that are specifically made for use with Rubio Monocoat.

  • Never leave your piece in a non climate controlled location such as a garage, hot or cold car, or storage locker. You have a solid wood piece of furniture that is built with glue and joinery and meant to live indoors. Major swings in temperature and humidity can and will cause wood to move, shrink, or expand and can cause finish damage, loosening of joints, and separation of resin to wood adhesion. Ecopoxy Resin will soften and loose it’s structural integrity at roughly 120 degrees.

EcoPoxy UVPoxy

I use EcoPoxy UV Poxy for Bath Caddies, some Tabletops and some Art Pieces. UV Poxy is an eco-friendly clear resin coat that leaves a hard glossy, clear finish on the piece. If this sounds like your item, it is finished with UVPoxy.

What to do

  • Dust with a soft clean cloth

  • Wipe with a water dampened cloth for cleaning

  • Shine with a glass cleaning product such as Windex, as needed.

  • Keep your piece out of prolonged direct sunlight and indoors in a climate controlled environment.

  • Avoid scratches! UVPoxy is a durable product that is often used to coat tables at bars and restaurants, but it will scratch.

  • If necessary, buff scratches with a plastic polishing compound.

What NOT to do:

  • Do not submerge in water

  • Do not use anything other than a fine soft cloth to clean, polish or buff your piece.

Kitchen Food Contact Items, Cutting Boards, Charcuterie Boards, Butcher Block Kitchen Counters, Butter Knives, and more:

Walrus Oil

Walrus Oil (Not made from Walruses!) is an amazing eco-friendly oil made for food contact surfaces and tools. It soaks into the wood and needs to be reapplied as your piece naturally dries out. I use Walrus oil as it ‘s the best product I have found that adheres to my commitment to using environmentally friendly finishes. However, there are a variety of oils, butters and waxes that you can use to keep your piece looking and feeling its best.

What NOT to do:

  • Never submerge your item in water

  • Never put your item in a dishwasher

  • Never leave outdoors in harsh weather

  • Never cut or serve raw meat on your wood board

What to do:

  • Wipe your board clean with a dry cloth, use a water dampened cloth if necessary.

  • Mild soap and water is fine, but use sparingly to clean and allow your board to throughly dry

  • Reapply your choice of butcher block oil, wax, or butter as often as you like. This is necessary when you piece feels dry to the touch. Allow the oil to soak in overnight and simply buff it off with a clean cloth the next day.
